Maria de Alvear

Maria de Alvear was born in Madrid and has lived in Cologne for over 35 years. She received the Bernd Alois Zimmermann Prize of the City of Cologne at an early age and studied New Music Theater with Mauricio Kagel. Since 1998, she has worked with video artists such as her sister Ana de Alvear and the British artist Isaac Julien. In the same year, she founded the music publishing house WORLD EDITION and has been publishing the magazine "KUNSTMUSIK" since 2003. Her interdisciplinary works are performed worldwide by renowned artists such as Ensemble Modern and the hr-Sinfonieorchester. She works with many soloists, orchestras and ensembles and has given concerts at renowned venues such as Lincoln Center, New York, and the Donaueschingen Festival. Numerous performances have been recorded for TV and radio broadcasts, including by SWR and WDR. In 2014, she received the Spanish National Prize for Music. The award ceremony by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia took place in Palencia Cathedral in 2016. She has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts since 2017.
