José Luis Fuentes Zárate is a Mexican musician born in Oaxaca in 1956. He began playing wind instruments at the age of 14 and later learned to play string instruments. In 1973 he founded the first Latin American and protest music group in Oaxaca, Grupo TINU. After settling in Holland in 1985, he played for various artists and performed at festivals and concerts throughout Europe. In 1986 he was one of the initiators of Mariachi Tierra Caliente, the first group of Mexican musicians in the Netherlands. He continues to be an active musician and instrument maker of traditional Mexican instruments.
